Where an employer’s assessment of First Aid needs identifies that a First Aider or Emergency First Aider is not necessary, the minimum requirement on an employer is to appoint a person to take charge of the First Aid arrangements, including looking after equipment and facilities, and calling the emergency services when required.
After completing the Appointed Person Course, individuals may choose to pursue further studies or training in various areas related to first aid, health and safety, or emergency response. Here are some potential continuing education options:
- First Aid at Work (FAW) Course: If individuals wish to enhance their first aid skills and become qualified First Aiders, they can consider enrolling in a First Aid at Work course. This course provides comprehensive training in first aid techniques, including CPR, wound management, and treatment for a wide range of injuries and illnesses.
- Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course: For individuals who want to develop their first aid skills to a higher level than the Appointed Person Course but don't require the full First Aid at Work qualification, the Emergency First Aid at Work course is an option. It provides training in basic life-saving skills and immediate first aid response.
- Occupational Health and Safety Courses: Individuals interested in expanding their knowledge in occupational health and safety can pursue courses or certifications specific to their industry or workplace. These courses can cover topics such as risk assessment, hazard identification, emergency preparedness, and workplace safety regulations.
- Health and Safety Management Courses: For individuals seeking to take on more significant responsibilities in health and safety management, courses or diplomas in health and safety management can provide in-depth knowledge and skills. These courses cover areas like risk management, legal compliance, safety audits, and incident investigation.
- CPR/AED Certification: Individuals can maintain and update their CPR and AED certification by participating in regular refresher courses or attending workshops offered by recognized organizations. These courses ensure that individuals stay up to date with the latest guidelines and techniques in resuscitation.
- Advanced First Aid Courses: Depending on individual interests and career goals, advanced first aid courses can be pursued to gain additional expertise. Examples include courses on wilderness first aid, paediatric first aid, sports first aid, or mental health first aid.
- Professional Development and Workshops: Individuals can attend workshops, seminars, or conferences related to first aid, emergency response, or health and safety. These events provide opportunities to learn about new developments, exchange knowledge with peers, and stay updated on best practices.
